Xàtiva was one of the most brilliant cities of Sharq al-Andalus. A refined urban centre, articulated around its medina and its morería, where Islam left a profound material, symbolic and cultural imprint that can still be traced today in the fabric of the city.

This morning-long cultural experience begins precisely there: in the spaces of Andalusi splendour. We will look at objects and sites that are essential to understanding Islamic Xàtiva, such as the celebrated Xàtiva basin, the site of the former mosque, and one of the bathhouses, vestiges that speak of an organised, cultivated city fully integrated into the medieval Islamic world.

From that first route, the visit takes a necessary and deliberate turn.

In the sixteenth century, Xàtiva became one of the harshest settings of the forced conversions of the Valencian Mudéjars in 1526. We will then walk through the main urban spaces where institutional violence was imposed, where the morería was set on fire more than once, and where the Muslim population was forced to renounce its faith in public, transforming for ever the human and spiritual face of the city.

The experience offers an unsweetened historical and heritage reading, inviting you to look at Xàtiva through its most extreme contrasts: Andalusi refinement and its destruction, coexistence and fear, memory and silence.

This is not a comfortable tour.

It is an invitation to understand, remember and name what happened.

Guided by art historian Belén Cuenca Abellán, this urban journey combines historical analysis, a reading of space and collective reflection, offering a deep look at one of the most traumatic episodes in the history of the Valencian territory.
