There are destinations you travel through as one opens an ancient manuscript.

Occitania can only be understood that way.

Between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries, this region of southern France was one of the great cultural centres of Europe. Romanesque art flourished here while much of the continent was barely waking from the first millennium. Here the troubadours were born, whose poetry transformed the idea of love for ever. Here merchants, pilgrims, monks, bishops and craftsmen lived side by side in some of the most prosperous cities of medieval Europe.

But it was also a land marked by conflict. The Crusade against the Cathars, the expansion of the power of the French monarchy and the religious transformations of the Late Middle Ages changed the fate of these cities for ever.

Our journey sets out to discover that history through some of its most extraordinary settings.

We will begin in Toulouse, the pink city, where stone gives way to brick and where the basilica of Saint-Sernin remains one of the largest surviving Romanesque churches in Europe. We will walk through the old chapter quarter, visit the extraordinary convent of the Jacobins —a true jewel of southern Gothic— and understand why this city was one of the great intellectual centres of the Middle Ages.

From there we will follow the roads travelled for centuries by merchants, pilgrims and wayfarers.

In Moissac we will discover one of the most beautiful cloisters of the medieval world and a sculpted portal that revolutionised Romanesque iconography.

In Albi we will explore an episcopal city declared a World Heritage Site, dominated by the imposing cathedral of Sainte-Cécile and by the figure of Toulouse-Lautrec, whose work will help us understand the artistic transformation of modern Europe.

In Cahors we will wander among medieval lanes, fortified bridges and old merchants’ houses that still keep the character of a city enriched by trade and by the Camino de Santiago.

But this journey is not only about visiting monuments.

As in every Dunya Hanya Patrimonio experience, each place forms part of a carefully constructed narrative. We will not travel through isolated cities, but through a single historical landscape in which architecture, religion, literature, art and society are in constant dialogue.
